Find a vest pattern. Your pattern choice will depend on several factors: style, size and complexity. When selecting a pattern, consider who will be wearing the vest. Kids' and adult vests will be different in size and style, so you must know your customer. When considering complexity, realistically assess your skill level, and select a pattern in line with your experience. This includes selecting a pattern that uses knitting needles with which you are familiar.

Select a yarn or yarns. You should select your yarns based on color scheme and feel. Yarns also vary in price. If you are an inexperienced knitter, avoid the more expensive yarns, such as cashmere, until you are confident in your knitting abilities. Select a yarn based on your pattern as well. Bulkier yarns will yield heavier vests, another factor to consider. Also consider whether the vest will be easily cleaned. Not all yarns are washable or easily cleaned.
