How to Build a Koi Pond - The Basics

Everyone wants to know how to build a Koi pond.
Many people are fascinated with a small waterfall or a small Koi fish pond somewhere around the house.
Why not go ahead and build one yourself? It is an easy task and after it is finished, you can relax in a chair and admire the results of your adventure.
The first thing you will need to do is to decide where you want to put your new pond.
Many people want it to be on the front lawn so that passers by can also admire it.
Others want a pond in the back of the house so that they can relax and watch the Koi or other outdoor fish you have put in the pond.
Once you decide where it is going to be, you will need to purchase some supplies from the local hardware store or online.
Some items you will need include - a shovel unless you already have one, a sheet of polyurethane (black if possible), a nice waterfall scene with a re-circulating water pump, an outside pump to filter the water, a nice but small filter system to keep the water fresh, a couple of extra glass fish tanks, large rocks to help build the waterfall, some mortar mix (self hardening) and some plants.
You will need the extra glass fish tanks for a fish hospital whenever you have a sick Koi that needs to be kept apart from the rest of the fish in the pond and one for creating bacteria for feeding Koi fish.
You've got your items but now you need to know how to build a Koi pond.
To begin, dig a hole at least 5 feet in diameter and at least 12 to 24 inches deep.
Then lay down the polyurethane with plenty of overhang, because you will use the left over to help support the sides of the Koi pond.
Then run a hose about the size of a garden hose from the bottom of the Koi pond to the top of the mound, where you can hook it up to a suck pump that will flow into an aquarium.
Cover the edges backup around the sides of the pond, and then you can lay sod around the new soil.
Now it is time to start construction on the water fall as this is what will make the entire Koi pond look like a small island retreat.
Place the large rocks around the pond making one side of the pond a high mound.
Most people prefer that the mound be facing the house if the Koi pond is to be in the back yard, and facing the street if it is to be in the front of the house.
To make the mound higher you should mix up a small amount of mortar mix, and you can use this to hold the stones in place, at the top of the mound take one of the fish aquariums and place it on the top of the mound, put your small suck pump in the aquarium and hook up your hose to it that is buried under the soil and stones.
Now you can place your plants around the rocks so that it will look natural, and fill the pond with water, then turn on the filter system and let it run for at least a day.
You can buy Koi fish online or at your local pet shop.
Let the plastic bag float on top of the water for at least an hour before turning them loose.
A word of hard learned advice to mention to you to purchase some screen to cover the top of your Koi pond to keep fish predators away from the fish.
You may not realize there are any birds that prey on fish until you put some Koi in the water, so you will want that screen on your pond.
