Should You Use Breast Milk Storage Bags To Store Breast Milk?

Breast milk storage bags are plastic bags that are specifically made for the collection and storage of breast milk. They are pre-sterilized and designed to withstand freezing and thawing with strong seals to help prevent leaking. Ordinary plastic sandwich bags are not recommended for breast milk storage.

With most brands of storage bags you will need to pump into a separate container and then transfer the milk into the bag for storage. Some brands come with a convenient adapter that allows you to pump directly into the bag, but you will still need to transfer the milk from the bag to a bottle after you thaw it out.

Plastic storage bottles, glass containers, and storage trays are also available for breast milk storage. There are advantages and disadvantages to each type of container. Here are the pros and cons of storage bags:

Pros:

  • Storage bags are usually less expensive than plastic containers or glass bottles.

  • Bags are convenient.

  • They are disposable so you do not have to clean them.

  • They take up less space in your refrigerator or freezer.

  • Milk in storage bags will thaw out more quickly than milk stored in glass or plastic containers.

Cons:

  • Storage bags can only be used one time. They cannot be washed and reused.

  • Bags are not as strong as glass or hard plastic containers.

  • Storage bags can leak or break.

  • Not all bags can be pumped into directly so you may have to transfer the milk from another container into the bag for storage.
