With no destination spas in Hartford County, where can you go when you really need to get away from it all for a day or even just a few hours of exquisite pampering? A Somers Day Spa & Salon, located about a half-hour north of Hartford in Somers, Connecticut, is one of the area's most luxurious day spas with professional skin care, spa and salon services provided in a cozy, relaxing environment.

It's the Hartford area's closest thing to a destination spa experience.

The Perfect Place to Pamper Your Face

I visited A Somers Day Spa in July of 2005 for a much-needed morning away and left at lunchtime feeling calm, clear-headed and re-energized. I was invited to change into a robe in the spa's bathroom, then awaited my first treatment in the snug relaxation room, where Laura Jacewicz had arranged vibrant day lilies snipped from her garden in front of the stone fireplace. Laura co-owns A Somers Day Spa with her daughter, Mandi, and both women bring to the business a strong background in skin care. Both are certified medical aestheticians, who were trained by noted plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Paula A. Moynahan.

The spa offers an extensive menu of facials, as well as advanced medical skin treatments specifically designed to treat imperfections such as age spots, dilated capillaries, Rosacea, sun damage and acne. A European Deep Cleansing Facial was exactly what I needed to brighten my complexion.

My aesthetician, Diane Emhoff, was professional and knowledgeable, explaining each step in the process as she used GlyMed products to gently exfoliate and hydrate my skin. She also shared tips which I've continued to employ in my own skin care routine, such as always smoothing eye cream from the inside corner of my eye outward.

A Nice Touch

Diane had noticed my dry hands, so she had me dip them in paraffin and tucked them inside warm aromatherapy herbal hand mitts by Tara Spa. I am always multi-tasking, so it was a truly indulgent experience for me to sit in a cozy chair in the relaxation room, unable to even read a magazine with my hands bundled in mitts.

My next treatment was a half-hour massage. The massage room was in the front of the spa, and at first, I found the noise from cars passing by on Route 83 distracting. I also wasn't sure at first that I liked the therapist's touch, which was gentler than I prefer. By the time the half-hour was over, however, I was shocked to realize I had started to drift off. I've had many massages, but I have never been so relaxed that I fell asleep.

After my treatments, Laura provided me with a tour of the facility and shared plans for expansion of the spa to accommodate her thriving business. I was particularly impressed with the couple's massage room, which featured side-by-side massage tables draped with red velvet blankets. You can often find treatment rooms that accommodate two at a destination spa, but this is a rarity for a day spa, making this a nice option for those in search of a quick, affordable romantic escape.

Hair to Toes

Two of the most popular areas of the spa, the pedicure chairs and the tiny hair salon, were both targeted for expansion. Laura explained that the spa's pampering pedicures are incredibly popular, and the salon has experienced "100 percent re-booking" for its upscale hair design and coloring services.

Other services offered by A Somers Day Spa include manicures, waxing, make-up application, full body airbrush tanning, lash extensions and tinting, and body treatments such as a salt glow and an algae wrap. Services tailored for men include a gentleman's facial, sports massage and gray blending for hair, beards and sideburns.

A variety of half- and full-day spa retreat packages is available. Somers Inn provides catering at the spa for those who would like to host an event for a bridal party or other group of up to eight people.

When I climbed into my car at the end of a blissful morning, I sat for just a few moments in the parking lot enjoying my newfound sense of peace. With a two-year-old and piles of work waiting at home, I knew it would be short-lived. Luckily, though, it lasted longer than the beautiful day lilies in the spa's relaxation room, which only bloom for a day.
