How to Make a Wool Beret

    • 1). Spread a large sheet of paper flat on a work surface. Draw a 13-inch circle using a compass and pencil. Draw a second 13-inch circle, and then draw an 11-inch circle inside the center of it. Draw a long rectangle about 2 inches by 24 inches. Cut out the pattern pieces, and cut the center from the second circle, creating a doughnut shape.

    • 2). Spread 1/2 yard of mid- to heavy-weight wool felt fabric on a flat surface. Arrange the pattern pieces on the fabric, and pin them into place. Cut them out, and then remove the pattern pieces and pins from the fabric.

    • 3). Fold the rectangular piece in half lengthwise, creating a long strip. Press flat with a warm steam iron. Sew a 1/4-inch seam down the raw edge. Turn the tube right-side out, fold the strip in half and sew the unfinished edge, creating a circle. Press this seam open with a warm steam iron. This piece will be the band that fits around the head of the wearer.

    • 4). Align the seam side of the sewn strip with the inside of the donut-shaped circle, right sides together. Pin the pieces together. It may be necessary to work with the donut-shaped piece to get it to fit. Sew a 5/8-inch seam along the raw edge of the pieces, and trim the finished seam to decrease bulkiness.

    • 5). Align the sewn piece with the remaining 13-inch circle, right sides together. Sew a seam about 5/8 inch around the outer edge of the circle. Trim the seam to decrease bulkiness, and then cut slits along the sewn edge at approximately 1-inch intervals, being careful not to cut through the sewn seam. This will keep the seam from bunching up when turned right-side out. Turn the beret right-side out, and press the finished beret with a warm steam iron.
