Going Green in Belô Nightlife

March 9, 2012

Belo Horizonte, known internationally for the number and diversity of its bars, was lacking a great Irish bar with Boxty and Dublin Coddle on the menu, a pint club for Guinness lovers, rock bands playing U2 and original songs, sports watching and a big celebration of Saint Patrick's Day. Now that gap has been filled by the Celtic Irish Pub.

Located in the Sion district, one of the best in BH for restaurants and nightlife, Celtic Irish Pub has won the 2011/2012 Revelation Bar of the Year award from the local guide by Brazilian weekly magazine Veja.

One of the reasons the pub has quickly become popular is its party atmosphere with live music. Tuesday is Elvis and Other Monsters night; Wednesday is Beatles night with different bands playing their hits. U2 Cover MG and Mosh Lab, a band formed in 2011, are other attractions at the pub.

The beer menu has respectable imported labels - Guinness, Old Speckled, Stella Artois, Hoegaarden. From the kitchen come many rich sandwiches served with fries such as the Celtic (prime burger with cheddar cheese on potato bread), the Sailor (salmon patty with lettuce, tomato and mayo) or the Mush (a Sloppy Joe with mushrooms, provolone and Worcestershire sauce). Or go for the Boxty, potato pancake filled with fillet and mushrooms; the prime ribs; the Critic Fillet, beef tenders in Guinness sauce with an orange reduction, served with French bread; and appetizers such as onion rings and crunchy shrimp.
