Youth Camps for Juvenile Offenders in California

    Pine Grove Youth Conservation Camp

    • The Pine Grove Youth Conservation Camp is cooperatively run by the Division of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) and CAL Fire. The DJJ staff is in charge of supervising the youths. The CAL Fire staff is responsible for supervising work projects. The camp is only open to male offenders. Juveniles are assigned to Pine Grove undergo training to assist firefighters in fire suppression throughout the state. Juveniles who do not have a high school diploma or GED are required to enroll in GED preparation courses. The goal of the conservation camp is to provide juveniles with entry-level skills and education that can be used to gain employment once they return home.

    Sylvester Carraway Public Service and Fire Center

    • The Sylvester Carraway Public Service and Fire Center operates with a format similar to the Pine Grove Youth Conservation Camp. The camp is open to both male and female offenders, and offers a formal drug treatment program. The camp also offers GED preparation and training with CAL Fire. Juveniles at the camp are expected to participate in fire prevention tasks, restoration and stream clearance. The camp is only open to low-risk offenders from other facilities.

    William F. James Boys Ranch

    • The William F. James Boys Ranch handles boys ages 15 to 18. The camp has GED tutoring and vocational training. The boys are allowed to work in various locations, including the Santa Clara Valley Water District. The camp offers drug treatment, sex offender counseling and tattoo removal. Boys are also counseled on how to get out of gangs. Boys can also participate in sports competitions.
