How to Use Salt in Pools

    • 1). Determine which type of salt chlorine generator your pool has. One type requires you to add salt to the water directly, while the other needs salt added to its reservoir. The second type then adds chlorine to the water extracted from the salt, says the website Home Tips.

    • 2). Add salt as required by the salt chlorine generator, as each type requires different amounts. If you have the first type of generator, add salt to the pool water directly. If you have the second type, add it to the reservoir within the generator.

    • 3). Use a chemical test kit to test the other chemicals in your pool water. If these chemicals become unbalanced, the salt chlorine generator will not work effectively. Test for stabilizer (cyanuric acid) levels, which should be between 60 and 80 parts per million (ppm). The salt level will be dictated by the instructions for your salt chlorine generator.
