1040S Instructions

    • 1). Download Form 1040 S from the IRS website. Print the document from your computer by pressing "File" and "Print" in the window that appears when the file opens.

    • 2). Review the filing date listed. In 2011, the filing date is April 18, 2011. If you need an extension, file Form 4868 for an automatic six-month extension. However, the extension does not apply to any taxes you owe. If you pay late, you will have to pay interest on unpaid portions and may be subject to penalties.

    • 3). Fill out your name, address, Social Security number and your marital status. Additionally, enter any exemptions that apply to you for the current tax year. Enter your wages, salaries tips, taxable and tax exempt interest, among other income disclosures in the "Income" section, lines 11 through 21.

    • 4). Enter and eligible deduction in the section labeled "Adjusted Gross Income." This section runs from Line 23 to Line 37. For example, you can claim deductions if you have educator expenses, moving expenses related to a job, self employment tax deduction,

    • 5). Complete lines 39 thorugh 53, the section labeled "Taxes and Credits." In this section, claim any credits or deductions that you qualify for. Select whether you want to have the IRS figure the tax on your taxable income for you at Line 44.

    • 6). Enter any taxes you have already paid or had withheld in lines 61 through 71. Enter any previous tax overpayments to made at line 73.

    • 7). Calculate the amount you owe at lines 76 and 77. Sign the tax return and review it for accuracy. Attach documents that affirm the income sources listed in the form, including your W-2 statement from your employer. If you have more than one employer, include each W-2 form.

    • 8). Fill out any corresponding schedules that accompany Form 1040. For example, if you claims business losses on Form 1040, you must fill out Form 1040 (Schedule C) and include that document when you mail Form 1040 to the IRS.

    • 9). Mail the completed return to the IRS address for your region. The address for your region will differ, depending whether you include a payment. Therefore, make sure that you send your document to the appropriate address.
